As we look around the world today, we could find ourselves thinking a great deal about a lost art…the art of living. Day by day, modern life takes your wellness away.

Many things blossom karmically for us in our lives, providing us with great feedback. What you can do as an antidote to challenges and obstacles, clearing the way ahead, is to engage in the wisdom practices of Ayurveda and yoga for yourself.

There is so much activity in the world, some of it very distasteful. People are suffering from devastating diseases and loneliness and are falling by the wayside as a result of war, drugs, gambling and pestilence. Peace and harmony are so wanted, so needed. If we want to rise out of this apparent chaos, we must change our own circumstances and move to another level of being. After which we will be available and capable to help others. But this message is to reassure you: that nature offers the answer. Do not despair. As with all mistakes, all is not lost if we don’t lose the lesson.

The founding visions from Yoga, Ayurveda, and Meditation, have transformed the holistic philosophy of wellbeing into my work and my writing. These have been amongst my best friends as I have moved along the path of life. They have lifted me up and supported me, and each step has provided me with a deeper knowing, arising from wisdom. 

These teachings, together with my published works, have sprung in great part, from rich and sacred associations with people and situations all over the world: saints, sages, yogis, rishis, the old, the young, the person with a hungry mind who has sought a new and better way to regain or maintain their health, and from life itself.

I feel truly blessed to invite you to share some time with me, in the healing heartland of Australia, which I now call home. Here, I look forward to you being involved with and engaged in continuing to nurture the essence and brand of our special piece of paradise.

Having been in the field of Yoga and Ayurveda for over five decades now, it has been more than a job. It’s been my calling… my sacred journey… and pure joy. I believe in the wisdom practices of Ayurveda and Yoga, and this belief continues to grow with every new student and practitioner I meet.

It is to this end, and in honour of all those who have served me along the way, that I share my life and my endeavours with you now.

All that I have learnt, I would like to share with you now. I trust that you will understand how invaluable this is to you because ignorance comes at a high price.

I wish you a very warm welcome, on this occasion of your first level of training in Ayurveda. It is my hope, that through this work, we will be good friends for life.

Ayurveda is unique, and different from any other path or system of healing that I know. It is widely accepted by the medical profession and the general public alike. Yoga provides its practitioners with many incredible tools to help balance your mind and body everyday. Meditation helps promote mental clarity and wellbeing. Pranayama, the conscious, deliberate regulation of the breath, assists in moving the body from high alert (the sympathetic nervous system) to a more grounded state of calmness (the parasympathetic nervous system). Many other complementary disciplines, have ‘borrowed’, ‘learnt’, and ‘cross-pollinated’ from the diverse aspects of Yoga and Ayurveda, thereby paying them the ultimate compliment.

Getting healthier is a consequence of eating right, moving right, breathing right and thinking right. Through your studies, you will learn how to do this, and become clearer, stronger, and healthier, by meeting your unique needs. You will then be able to share this with others. Be strong. You will meet people with bodies to fix, minds to quieten, broken spirits that need releasing, and lives that need healing. You will spend many precious hours teaching them how to address their circumstances, and not just mask their symptoms.

The intermediate objective is to overcome self-sabotage, dissolve mental impurities and clear the mind for Self-realisation. Currently, who you think you are, arises from the thoughts you have about yourself. You are not a thought or the object of any consciousness. You are the subjective consciousness itself. Only when you truly know who you are, and realise your uniqueness, will you know what is possible. It is your vantage point that you’re stuck in. In the bigger picture, you are a totally determined being.

Ayurveda and Yoga are a lifetime experience … and through them, you will discover the experience of a lifetime. For progress on such a holistic (i.e. holy) path, regular spiritual practice, sadhana, is essential. Learners require time for sadhana, in order to maintain their equilibrium and inspiration.

Be a leader

Martin Luther King said, “I have a dream.” Leaders are people who are in pursuit of a dream. They’re risk-takers, who don’t suffer from self-consciousness. They excite others about their vision, make it their mission, and encourage others to join them. As a true leader, you must come to accept that what others think about you is not really in the scheme of things, if you want to take on the world and make life the way it ought to be. Follow your dreams.

Your spiritual health lies in your ability to live in harmony with the external universe. Your mental health is dependent upon your ability to live in harmony with yourself. Your mental condition has both a physical and social impact. You are the guardian and custodian of this planet. Your own survival depends upon not disturbing the fragile balance between nature and living organisms. You must prevent wanton destruction and return to the equilibrium of nature. If you cut down a tree for your own use, plant another. Reduce your carbon footprint. Ensure the purity of water by not polluting the waterways and ocean, directly or indirectly. Ensure that the air and space are not poisoned, by your thoughts, words, or deeds.

To enjoy spiritual rewards and to be fit and healthy, you need to eat well, according to your unique constitution. Your body and mind need the best food, and your appetite, digestion, metabolism, and elimination to be functioning optimally, in order for them to provide you with the nutrition you require. The food you consume, becomes your appearance, your mode of expression and has a vital influence on your state of mind and happiness.

I know that we’re friends now. I welcome you to our community, sangha as a member of our Yoga and Ayurvedic family and ‘tribe’. I am both a friend and mentor to you. I trust that you will keep in touch. You will be the standard-bearers of this amazing teaching. I have given you the best material that I am able to give, a good clear, basic knowledge for those of you who will teach after me, so that you can carry on this work in a skilful manner. My personal vision is Living Peace. My mission has been to take this peace and healing from heart to heart, door to door, and shore to shore. It is up to you to apply the teachings in a way that will serve to uplift human beings physically, mentally, and spiritually. Let your vision include everyone to create raving fans, from the original telephone enquiry to the end-use client. PRACTICAL SKILLS TRAINING

You will be required to travel to HIA to do your practical training, which includes; massage, kati basti, shirodhara and conducting Ayurvedic Lifestyle Consultations.

  • 3 day practical training – Abyhanga (massage) Gold Coast campus (includes Common Unit Performance Tasks)
  • 3 day practical training – Kati basti and Shirodhara Gold Coast campus (includes Common Unit Performance Tasks)
  • 10 day retreat – Nirvana Wellbeing retreat – Clinical Practice
  • 7 day practicum – Gold Coast campus – Ayurvedic consultations/treatments/assessment and Clinical Practice

Please note

If you are unable to attend Clinical Practice at Nirvana Wellbeing Retreat, you will need to source a clinical placement where you are able to  complete these hours.

SHANTI GOWANS is a renowned Yogi, International spiritual teacher and living master. Trained from childhood in the ancient techniques, she is a master of the traditional wisdom and techniques of Yoga, as well as in the system of philosophy and psychology on which such techniques are based. Born in India, and educated in both the Eastern and Western traditions, Shantiji has lived in Australia since 1972, when she established The Shanti Niketan Yoga Centre in Melbourne. In 1995, The Shanti Yoga Meditation Institute was established on the Gold Coast (Australia) where Shantiji currently lives and formally teaches a community of students.
