Topic 6.03.05 To prop or not to Prop?. VERSION CONTROL: 1 August 2017

Whilst we recognise that no artificial aid is going to do what the Yoga posture does in awakening the awareness, calming the nerves, strengthening the will, and bringing in its wake many other spiritual involvements and benefits, the use of props has become increasingly popular as an aid to practicing Yoga.

Generally I recommend adjusting the asana by finding avenues of support and balance within the body rather than through use of any external apparatus. There are an infinite number of ways to adjust an asana. Be creative, sensitive and find methods through your own exploration and awareness within your own body. Breathe into the tight, tense areas of resistance. Accept yourself and where you are now physically, emotionally, mentally. Work at your own capacity. Practice from the inside out, creating the practice that most suits you. The fruits of Yoga practice mature with patience and care.

Utilising props might aid asana progress, but could detract from the practice of awareness and deeper personal progress in Yoga. Having said this, however, the use of props in the form of belts, blocks, chairs and platforms, the wall etc. are tools that aid Yoga as therapy. Here of course, the goal is different – specific, not holistic. Therapy not Yoga!
