Topic 3.6. The Law of Reflection

  1. The Law of Reflection

The universe is a mirror of your heart

In the beginningless beginning (which means before the existence of anything else), emptiness dances. This cosmic dance has been described as the spirit of wind. Wind has no rules. In the absence of rules, friction arises, and then, heat. The action of heat upon the ‘nothingness’ sweats the universe into existence. As this liquid portion cools, it solidifies. The cosmic dance of creation expressed, and continues to express itself in five steps: stillness, movement, transformation, fluidity and cohesion. These morph themselves into space, wind, fire, water and earth respectively. Everything in the manifested universe has all five of these steps (the five great elements), as their building blocks.

The scent of light is Earth,

Its taste is Water;

It’s image is radiance from Fire,

Its touch is Wind,

It’s sound is Space.

All matter is frozen light.

Light is a metaphor for intelligence or wisdom, the light of the mind.

The dawning of the great Eastern sun holds a profound treasury on the path of indestructible wakefulness. Learn to rise like the sun.

The law of reflection is the predictable behaviour of reflected light. When a ray of light strikes a mirror, the light ray reflects off that mirror. Reflection involves a change in the direction of a ray of light. All light waves are bound to the law of reflection.

He who passively accepts evil is as much involved in it as he who helps to perpetrate it. He who accepts evil without protesting against it is really cooperating with it.

                                                            Martin Luther King Jr.

All metaphysical or spiritual experiences have a biological basis. When the brain, the marvelous instrument of perception, is cleaned of memories and emotional scars, you will connect with and clearly reflect, the universe within and around you. You will encounter god as the air you breathe, the food you eat, the water you drink, the spirit which is eternal and your freedom of thought, which builds every cell in your body. If your thoughts are harmonious, you will find wisdom, intelligence and happiness your whole life long.

In the East, reflection arises from a person’s cosmic purpose, or dharma. Reflection is a mind-quality that arises when thoughts are still. Expansiveness in meditation (braham dhyan) and the breath of dissolution (kalajayi pranayam), are two elements that arise naturally from this and they give rise to pure awareness and a deep simplicity.

Simplicity is harmony in complexity. It’s not about living frugally and close to nature. We can’t go back to the past and live only as farmers or hunters and gatherers. The arrow of linear time moves forward.

Simplicity is living in a complex world with ease and flow. It is not a complex life which makes living complicated. It is the absence of a centre within, which throws a person into chaos. A centre within integrates feelings, thoughts, actions and helps connect a person with the world. It creates harmony between opposites to prevent fear, fragmentation and suffering. This natural, inherent state is called sahaja (saha= with ja= born) in the Vedas.

Meditation and Yoga give rise to a sense of being in the eye of a storm, where there is peace and quietude, even though all around, events and things keep moving faster and faster in chaotic ways.
