Other points to consider

  • Before client removes clothes, ” let me ask you a few things…”
    Ask client if they:
  • If they need to use the bathroom before the treatment.
  • If they will require a shower after massage.
  • Enquire about previous kati basti treatments. Refer to previous records to prepare the room properly for each individual patient e.g. electric blanket on or off?
  • Offer to put personal belongings in bowl/basket
  • Clothes can be left on for kati bast, or they may like to take their shirt off.
  • Help client onto the bed. If unsure, ask: “how would you like to get onto the table? You can guide me to help you.”
  • Once client is in position check to see if the client’s back dips, if so, before treatment place place a flat pillow under stomach to try and flatten back area.
  • Client lies facedown. Therapist adjusts position of client so that it is most conducive for best treatment, informs ‘I am going to realign your legs on the table, is that OK?
  • Let the client know what is happening in advance, prior to doing it. Ask if they are comfortable.
  • Place towel on upper back and a towel over the buttocks, tucked into the client pants.
  • Make sure just the area to be treated is uncovered.
  • Ask client if they are warm enough on their legs and upper back. Have a blanket ready.
  • I’m going to place a lovely warm towel on your back to prepare the area’ (Place towel over whole area, with no area exposed. Test it for warmth on your arm. Say “… just popping it on now”. Pat on for a few minutes.
  • I’m going to start treatment oil now. Let client know: “this may feel a little cool”, when placing dough on back
  • Put your hand on their back. “Popping it on now. Just pulling the towel back up, will be pressing down. It may take a few minutes. How are you feeling, is everything OK?”
  • Just above body temperature to start, ask is this temperature is OK, engage the client with this part of the treatment.
  • Note: Oil is getting hotter gradually. Never expose the skin, always covered with warm oil
  • “I’m going to place more hot oil on, let me know if it’s OK?”
  • Make sure you’re not dripping oil on floor
  • After about 20 – 30 minutes finish treatment
  • Check time, remove oil, take all away, make sure it doesn’t run down the sides of the client’s body.
  • When removing the dam/dough, make sure all flour residue is cleaned off the skin, otherwise the massage is gritty, keep the towel in place so it doesn’t run between buttocks.
  • Be mindful which way the oil will run absorb the oil when you remove the dam with a towel.
  • Dry the area and keep covered until ready to do the besan flour scrub, use the hot towel in rice cooker here.
  • Use about half a teaspoon of Chick pea flour for the scrub
  • Place on your hands and inform client “I’m popping a scrub on now,”
  • Gently massage lower back, may ask how is the pressure
  • Explain you will wipe area with a warm with towel again, Listen for feedback, never ask again.
  • Human touch:  “I am going to help get you up. How would you like to get up. Rolling on your side? Let me know how?” Leave hand on client’s shoulder
  • Ask client ‘are you OK’ I’m going to leave you now.
  • If client is giddy, reassure them: “in your own time, no hurry…”
  • If client feels groggy/spaced out, take this into account when you get client up off the table. Use table, if necessary help client put on shoes and socks, a shoe-horn may help.
  • Take client to cushioned chair to fill in feedback form (if they are having a shower guide them there)
  • Tell them you will get their personal belongings, bring bowl
  • Ask if the client can fill in the feedback form, then leave them, don’t stand over them as they fill out the form.
  • When clients has finished feedback form (do not read in front of client) ask” are you feeling OK”, mention re-booking
  • Record any notes on clients chart, make sure you use the right language on record forms, clients can ask to read your feedback, so don’t use negative language, eg., “client was fat”
  • Check the date is on the form and your name
  • See client to door and help to their car if required. Particularly if they are elderly.
