Topic 6.05.01 What to wear. VERSION CONTROL: 1 August 2017

Natural fibres are best. Wear loose comfortable clothing that you can move in, and practice in bare feet.

Yoga exercises can be performed in any attire that is non-restricting, and the Yogi should try to avoid all tight restrictive clothing that interferes with circulation, breathing, the movement of the back and other muscles, and the normal activities of the body. It is a poor choice to build your sense of identity and self worth dependent on wearing restrictive clothing. Becoming aware of the choices you make and why you make them leads to self knowledge. A better choice is wearable wellbeing. Times they are a-changing…and we must respond to intuition and the calling of the psyche towards healing, growth, longevity. The accepted bare-minimum dress of Yoga can hardly be improved upon…For men, it is a tracksuit or athletic shorts; for women, a leotard and footless tights.

It is important that the feet must be bare to give complete contact with the ground and freedom for your toes. It’s safer too. If you have cold feet, wear a thick pair of socks that you can remove whilst you are doing the postures, and replace during relaxation.
