Topic 6.08.19 Find the Balance. VERSION CONTROL: 1 August 2017
Hatha Yoga is the yoga of balance. Ha, symbolises strength, heating, expansion. Tha, flexibility, cooling, contraction. A balance of these energies is achieved as you work regularly on both body and mind.
• In stillness we find the peace and contentment that quietness brings.
• If equanimity and balance are sacrificed to accomplish posture, the posture may be reached but the exercise has lost its purpose.
• Be aware of balance from the initial phase.
• Maintain conscious awareness and control of lower back, shoulders, neck and head, leg and arm alignment during a posture.
• When balancing, especially while trying to hold a position on one leg, fix your gaze firmly on a fixed point either on the floor, or on an object in your line of vision.
• This concentration will still your mind, and aid the balance of your body.
• Avoid moving your head rapidly.
• Speaking or laughing with embarrassment when you lose your balance, breaks your concentration and distracts others. This can retard your progress and effectiveness further.
• So, if you lose your balance, simply carry on where you left off, without any feelings of frustration, disgust, shame, embarrassment or other negative reactions.
